Girls
gather to break sterotype (Advertiser Article)
The PreCalculus class is going on a 'field trip' to the grade school
playground. As some students go back and forth on the swing, fondly
recalling memories of carefree, younger days, other students gather
position data of the swinging motion with calculator-based rangers.
The group returns to their classroom, plots a graph of the data
and determines a trigonometric equations to describe the motion.

Everyday Heros is a program recognizing teachers who have made a
difference in the lives of their students and are dedicated, innovative
and an inspiration. The program, sponsored by the Department of
Education, private and parochial schools, Papa John's Hawaii, Foodland
and Coca-Cola Hawaii, begins at the grassroots level, where parents,
students, peers and other members of the local community can nominate
teachers for recognition. The Academy's Lurline Choy, a Social Studies
teacher and the senior class advisor, and William Plourde, a teacher
in the Theology Department, are nominees for this honor.
Choy has successfully involved
students in the study of Economics at the Academy, convincing
them that the understanding and appreciation of the discipline is
achievable and viable for them. In addition to her duties in the
classroom, Choy willingly shoulders other tasks that extend the
education process, including coaching the Mock Trial Team and spearheading
the Economic Summit for Girls.
Like Choy, Plourde's teaching also extends beyond
the four-wall boundary of the classroom. As part of his Theology
curriculum, Plourde takes students to clean the King Street Cemetary
twice a year. Beyond sweating and lugging filled trash bags, the
students take in some history and reflect on the meaning of mortality.
After the school day is done, Plourde serves as a coach, 'by night',
for the Lancer Sailing Team.
